All products are made from minimum 65% recycled materials, including 90% recycled stainless steel (GRS certified), BPA free plastic (including some but not all ocean-bound plastic) and a silicone strap. Material used for exterior coating is not confirmed. China-based manufacturing suppliers monitor water usage and treat waste water in accordance with local regulations and their municipality, but no specific tracking or targets are in place. Product packaging is 100% recycled, plastic-free, and recyclable. Boxes are custom to the bottle to reduce shipping impact and they use recycled cardboard inserts instead of plastic packaging filler. Their factory reuses and recycles all scrap materials from production. Circularity is addressed through a business model of using recycled materials to manufacture products, plus through product repairs offered and component replacement with a 10-year warranty. Brand also helps facilitate proper disposal of bottles with recycling recommendations on their website. Climate action is taken by Ocean Bottle through SWEEP, an emission management tool, to measure 78% Scope 3 emissions. The brand helped convert to in-house solar panels at their factory to provide 20% solar energy. Numerous actions have been taken to reduce carbon footprint by funding several carbon sink projects, such as a Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) seagrass meadow equivalent in size to 315 football fields in Kenya’s Vanga Bay and supporting 560 ha of mangrove coastal habitats. While they don’t use the carbon neutrality measure (as they believe the protocols don’t adequately measure impact products like theirs), the brand has committed to being a Climate Pledge Friendly brand which means they agree to neutralise emissions. No formal commitment, policy, tracking and/or targets are in place relating to waste, chemical use, energy efficiency or biodiversity. The brand is a 100% vegan brand with no use of animal products or by-products.

Ocean Bottle’s workforce has ample benefits and support in place, which includes stock options, annual and family leave, medical insurance, mental health resources and support, flexible working options, workshops and classes, electric vehicle leasing, discount period products, and a pet friendly office. The brand also has numerous policies in place to protect workers. Ocean Bottle openly shares information on their supply chain, which includes bottles being made in Hangzhou, China by Everich, who have REACH and FDA certifications. They source all materials locally, except 50% of the baseplates which are made from recycled PP which they fund the collection of through partners like Plastic Bank and Plastics For Change. The plastic is collected either in the Philippines or in India. A supplier Code of Conduct with Human Rights & Modern Slavery statements is in place. Everich is audited against the BSCI standard and has undergone Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audits (SMETA). The brand ran a DE&I company survey in 2023 and implemented numerous workshops on a range of DE&I and Impact related topics in response. Their DE&I approach is disclosed in their impact report. Not minority or female owned but the brand has women in positions of leadership. Ocean Bottle has reasonable privacy and digital protections in place and products are relatively low risk, being made of stainless steel (the part of the product that continuously touches the liquid inside) and only BPA-free plastic for lids; however, no certified safety rating is available.

Ocean Bottle is a relatively small business with 47 employees. They have their B Corp certification and provide comprehensive, transparent and regular (annual) reporting on sustainability initiatives and progress. The brand has no history of greenwashing, plus external public communication is demonstrably used as a tool to drive positive environmental impact. Their Ocean Co Impact Engine is a software platform that connects high quality, science-based ocean impact projects in the global south to organisations and individuals who want to support them, alongside a tracking app for impact. An extensive give-back scheme is built into the brand’s business model, and for every Ocean Bottle sold, they fund the collection of 11.368 kg of ocean-bound plastic (about 1000 plastic bottles). 16,141,388 kg of ocean-bound plastic had been collected as of March 2024. They also fund two carbon sink projects and provide support to an educational initiative in Manila, Philippines.The brand also partners with Plastics For Change, Plastic Bank, and rePurpose to assist with plastic collection. Trustpilot and Amazon reviews are very positive (4.7 and 4.3 stars, respectively at the time of writing). Reviews note the quality of Ocean Bottle’s products. Customers generally feel that products are well-made and effective. Many customers reference the product’s durability and stylishness. Some customers have noted that the temperature retention performance can vary slightly from the claimed 18 hours cold and 6 hours hot. Brew Flask - Sahara Red

My family and I have been testing this flask throughout our summer for post swim coffees on the beach (and beyond). The lid is a super innovative design - love how it stops coffee from spilling when knocked about a bit and I found it very easy to wash out quickly (we had numerous sand incidents at the beach so this was particularly helpful). I tested the flask in Sahara Red and so many people complimented the color and stylish design and showed interest in the whole Ocean Bottle mission. It also kept coffee and chai lattes hot for a couple of hours on the beach though I’m yet to test it for longer than that.

Ocean Bottle Original (Sand Stone) & OB Lite (Shale Green)

We’ve been using the Ocean Bottle Original for a couple of months for all kinds of things from sport to a day out and about. The bottle is a great size, fitting in a ton of liquid for the day and keeping the temperature nice and cool - which is quite the feat as we’ve used it on 39°C (~102°F) days a few times this summer. The OB Lite though is the real winner for us. Lyall and I have been both trying to assert our ownership over this little beauty. It’s stylish in such an understated way, holds just the right amount of water for our sporting activities (we do yoga, gym, running and jujitsu) and fits nicely into our car holder. Also our 3 year old son can easily carry it and drink from it independently which is harder with the big bottles. I also love that the OB Lite will be easier to recycle if it ever comes to the end of its life.
